Below the Line

Event: 16/05/2011 - 20/05/2011

What can you get for two dollars or one pound these days? A bottle of water, a local train ticket, perhaps a knick knack from the flea markets – in other words, not much. So would it shock you to learn that 1.4 billion people worldwide are forced to live on this tiny amount per day?

Live Below the Line is an awareness and fundraising campaign that will take place in Australia, the United States of America and the United Kingdom this May. Rather than simply raising money, this campaign encourages participants to experience life below the poverty line. For four days, contributors will limit their grocery bill to just two dollars or one pound per day.

If you think this sounds impossible, keep in mind that for many families, that amount also needs to cover housing, education, transport and other day to day costs.

If you wish to participate in this campaign, you can sign up via the website (don't forget to select the right country from the top right hand menu). Live Below the Line will take place from 16 until 20 May.

This initiative was founded by Richard Fleming in 2010. Read this article for his tips on how to make your budget stretch further.
