Ok, so Covent Garden has seen its fair share of street performers but there was an extra special performance on a gorgeous Saturday afternoon.
Ballet doesn't always seem accessible to people outside of the arts, but Royal ballet choreographer Kristen McNally has decided to bridge the gap by inviting visitors to the Apple Store to play an active role in choreographing a piece with the four dancers. There was also a beautiful pre-choreographed performance plus the two interactive ones that were performed to extracts of Kanye West's latest album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.
Kanye West has used ballet dancers in the recent video for Runaway, which is taken from the album and seemed like the perfect track to create a unique performance. Despite confusion from passers by, the performances went down really well.
As well as displaying McNally's admiration for Kanye West, the interactive performances were to help promote Draft Works which is held at the Royal Opera House's Linbury Studio this April. In a sense this is a break from the members of the Royal ballet's busy schedule as the brief is left open, so dancers get a chance to showcase exciting experimental work relevant to new audiences, long or short. It is a great way to get a glimpse of the world of ballet.
