Graduate Fashion Week

Event: 05/06/2011
Celebrating its 20th year, Graduate Fashion Week is back with another packed wardrobe of creative designs by the country's youngest and possibly most creative fashion talent.

The show is your chance to take a look at the designers and dressmakers of tomorrow, with 50 universities putting on more than 20 fashion shows between them.

This sensational celebration of all things sartorial has been running since 1991 and has served to entertain and inspire designers and wannabe designers from across the UK and beyond.

Indeed, Graduate Fashion Week has launched many a career: Christopher Bailey, Stella McCartney, Julian MacDonald, Antonio Baradi, Hussein Chalayan, Stuart Vevers and Owen Gaster have all benefited from exposure at the event.

There's
even talk that Graduate Fashion Week's '1999 Graduate Fashion Designer of the Year' winner, Sophie Cranston, is designing Kate Middleton's wedding dress, though the whole thing is so hush-hush that we'll have to wait for Kate and William's big day to find out.

Three of the four days of Graduate Fashion Week (so actually not quite a week then) is open to trade only, but on the opening day - Sunday 5th June - the doors are thrown open to the general public.

For just £5 you can gain entry to the exhibition where you can browse through the work of the up-and-coming designers to see what the fashionistas of tomorrow will be wearing to the kinds of parties we probably won't be going to.

If you want to see the clothes on bodies strutting down a catwalk rather than wrapped around a mannequin, tickets for shows cost £10 (plus a bit extra for the booking fee). See the website for more information on the different shows you can enjoy.

Graduate Fashion Week is, as you can probably imagine, a lively gathering with a lot of colourful characters (as well as colourful materials) milling about.

If you're into clothes design or just want to get an inkling of who or what is going to be hot in tomorrow's world of fashion, then this event will be well worth investigating.
