They say that a picture is worth a thousand words, but the award-winning photographs on display at the Brisbane Powerhouse (
119 Lamington Street) are worth so much more than that.
The
Walkley Awards is the most prestigious journalism award in Australia. The awards were founded and named after Sir William Walkley, found of Ampol, in 1956. In 2000, the awards merged with the Nikon Press Photograph of the Year Awards to recognise the work of
photojournalists.
It is these photojournalists who feature in the
Nikon Walkley Press Photo Exhibition. The exhibit is presented by the Walkley Foundation and Nikon Australia and showcases more than one hundred finalist photographs that were selected for the nomination short list.
The photographs are varied and depict a wide range of topics, such as sports, politics, photographic essay and daily life. The subjects are human and animal, city and bush, famous and ordinary, while the scenes captured are monumental, poignant, exuberant or heart breaking. These photographs portray the highest and lowest moments in national and international news, and the only thing they have in common is that they were taken by some of the nation's best photographers.
The Nikon Walkley Press Photo Exhibition takes place from 1 February until 27 February. Opening hours are Monday to Friday from 9.00am until 5.00pm and Saturday and Sunday from 10.00am until 4.00pm. Admission is free.
