Nillumbik Shire has the best of both worlds – close to civilization but rural enough to offer tranquillity and long stretches of natural beauty – so it's little wonder that the area is home to a vibrant community of artists. Visitors to the area are afforded a unique opportunity to get inside the artist's studios this weekend.
Artists Open Studio is a free event taking place on Saturday 30 April and Sunday 1 May. Two dozen studios will open their doors to the public, giving tourists a chance to watch the artists and discuss their work. A wide variety of disciplines are covered, such as painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, textile, photography and screen printing.
Twenty four studios and thirty four artists will take part in the Open Studio event. Studios like
Dunmoochin and
The Baldessin Press will be involved, while participating artists include
Linda MacAulay,
Diana Jackson,
Margaret Summerton and
Kate Hudson. Participants are located all over the shire, with the regions covered including Eltham, Warrandyte, Bend of Islands, Panton Hill, Wattle Glen and St Andrews.
Visitors have the option to purchase or commission pieces and some studios will offer classes and workshops.
The Nillumbik Artists Open Studio weekend will take place on 30 April and 1 May between 11.00am an 5.00pm. To find out more about individual artists or studios, visit the Open Studio website.
