Open Garden Squares Weekend

Flying into London on a clear day and looking out of the window, it's amazing to see just how green a city it is. Besides the large parks spread over the capital, there are hundreds of smaller green spaces too.

Many of these smaller lawns, gardens and squares are closed to members of the public – except for one weekend a year.

Open Garden Squares is your unique chance to take a closer look at some of London's more peaceful spots, with more than 200 across the city throwing their gates open to the general public.

Taking place on the 11th and 12th of June, there'll be no better time to enjoy these delightful squares, many of which remain unseen by most Londoners.

Some of the participating places, such as Russell Square, are open all year to the public, but they'll still be worth a visit as many will be putting on special events like Punch and Judy shows, guided tours, and picture exhibitions.

With so many places to see, it'll be too much of a rush, if not a total impossibility, to get around all the gardens and squares, so a bit of planning is recommended.

It would obviously be wise to focus on the gardens usually closed to the public (117 in all), and the Open Garden Squares excellent website can help you to sort through the long list of places to see.

Here are a few suggestions of places you can visit (the following are usually closed to the public):

Hanover Gardens (W11) – Part of the historic Ladbroke Estate, strolling around this woodland garden will leave you wondering if you've been mysteriously transported far away from the urbanity of the Smoke.

The South London Botanical Institute (SE24) – Explore London's smallest but no less impressive botanical garden. You'll find more than 500 species, including medicinal herbs, scented plants, and carnivorous plants too – so watch your fingers.

Fassett Square (E8) – Walking about Fassett Square, you might be reminded of something. Think soap (the TV kind). Think Albert Square. That's right, apparently this area was the inspiration for the Eastenders set. Come and decide for yourself.

HM Prison Holloway (N7) – Hardly surprising that this one is usually closed to the public, but it's a rare opportunity to see what green delights lie behind the big walls of one of the UK's most famous prisons. Tours are escorted, last two hours and must be booked in advance.

A ticket for Open Garden Squares gets you entry to all gardens over both days, and are a steal at just £7.50 (in advance). On the day you'll have to pay £10.

Be aware that some of the gardens are only open on one of the two days, and many have limited visiting times. See the official website for full information on all the gardens and squares.
