This summer 'pop-up' is in. There are secret pop up bars and restaurants, pop up sales and now a pop up outdoor cinema is coming to Fulham Palace.
The only way this could be any better if it was literally pop up and the screen popped up all of a sudden, but his is one of the few things this event lacks.
Firstly the venue is great. Fulham Palace is an elegant framing for the big screen and there's plenty of space for picnics and blankets – all of which are very welcome – so it will be an evening in civilised surroundings. The screen is also away from the road so your cinematic experience won't be marred by unnecessary background noise.
Secondly it's reasonably priced at £15 a ticket – which is less than you'll pay at a lot of regular cinemas – and half of your ticket money goes to charity anyway: the Sustainability Institute in South Africa. There's not much of a correlation between the event and the charity, but that's just splitting hairs – like the suggestion that the cinema screen should literally pop up – the point is you're doing something good for others at the same time as you're enjoying yourself. Everyone is literally a winner.
Thirdly they're showing a good choice of films:
First in the series is the deliciously decadent and quite naughty
Dangerous Liaisons, which suits the gorgeous backdrop perfectly – bring your champagne, best flirtatious manner and caustic wit and you'll fit in perfectly. Dangerous Liaisons is showing on Friday the 9th of September.
The following Friday, the 16th, you can expect a very different evening, when they show
The Omen -
you do know Fulham Palace is haunted don't you? You might want to bring a stiffer drink to this one – and maybe something to put over your eyes in the scary bits.
And on the Friday after that (the 23rd) they're showing the genius comedy,
Some Like It Hot - and they've laid on a jazz band before to get you in the mood.
So three very different films for three very different evenings.
