You can always rely on the good folks of Portobello to come up with something worth checking out - its latest extravaganza is a film festival, and a free one at that.
Running every evening (except Monday the 12th) from now until the 18th of September, the 16th
Portobello Film Festival will this year be paying particular attention to London films as well as the wider European film scene.
Most of the movies are shorts, so you can expect to see around 12 different movies each evening. The projectors crank into action at 6.30pm nightly and switch off at 10.30pm. Hundreds of movies will be screened over the 18 days.
There'll be lots of special film-related events taking place throughout the festival too, so be sure to take a look through the
official programme (pdf file) to find out what pops your corn.
And it's not all movies either. The Muse will be putting on a number of events as part of the 18-day festival - on the 6th of September, for example, it'll be showing artwork by some of the capital's finest contemporary urban artists, such as Zeus, #CodeFC, Solo One,
Lucy Sparrow and BA5H.
The Tabernacle is another venue that'll be joining in the fun. From the 14th of September until the 17th, it'll be hosting the
Caribbean Film Corner, showing a number of movies, including The First Rasta (Jamaica/France), Hush11 (Barbados) and The Coast (Jamaica).
On the 16th of September, the
Pop Up Cinema will be premiering the 12 shortlisted films from the
Virgin Media Shorts competition, the UK's biggest short-film contest - this is a great opportunity to catch the work of tomorrow's movie directors.
Here are the addresses for all four locations involved with the festival:
Portobello Pop Up Cinema (3 Acklam Road, W10 5TY)
Westbourne Studios Cinema (242 Acklam Road, W10 5JJ).
Tabernacle (Powis Square, W11 2AY)
The Muse (269 Portobello Road, W11 1LR)
Oh, and don't forget the final night of the festival - it's the
grand awards ceremony, with prizes going to the best ten films shown over the course of the festival.
