When was the last time you went to a puppet show? It's probably been a while, which is surprising since
'Being John Malkovich' made puppetry seem cool again. In a slightly experimental way. At least that's what I thought. Anyway now is your chance to see some puppetry for grown ups, as the people behind the
Puppet Theatre Barge have created an original puppetry work for adults for their new summer season which they're playing near Richmond Bridge.
The cast of The Money Game
Their play is called '
The Money Game', and they promise it will deal with the economic crisis – and what could be more grown up than that – along with birth, life, love, death and growing up, in the context of those who care about money primarily and those that don't. They also promise that with this show they're bringing the art of the marionette into the digital age, which sounds like a very interesting promise – if a big one.
Don't be put off by the fact that the flyer has the words 'meditation on' printed on it, the Puppet Theatre Barge is a really cool thing to experience.
You'll be surprised how effective puppetry can be at eliciting emotions from you, and the fact that it's a puppet show forces you to use your imagination in a way that live acting doesn't. But that was one of the best bits of being a kid for most of us.
