I'm a full-time writer in the food & leisure industries. I believe life should be lived to the full. I hope my stories inspire you to do just that.
Event: 24/09/2011 - 04/10/2011
I love 'the show' Just writing this story's got me all excited. The Royal Melbourne Show is on from Saturday the 24th of September to
Tuesday the 4th of October at the Melbourne Showgrounds.

I loved it as a kid; I love it now, albeit for different reasons. What I love most is that you can do the things that give you a warm spring glow, and skip the things that simply don't float your boat.

So, while showbags and flying through the air on death defying rides were a hoot when I was 10, these days you're more likely to find me grazing on the yummy samples in the Grand Pavilion or shopping in the Lifestyle Pavilion. The Ugg Boots just our front are a good buy (about $90), as are the wheat pillows at the first stall on your left just inside the main entry ($5).

I think too many people steer clear of the show because of the cost. If planned carefully, it can be done on a budget. For instance, take advantage of special ticket, ride and other cost-saving packages (just hover over the 'Tickets & Packages' tab for details. Bring lunch. My mum would do it when we were kids - and I still do it now. Restrict the kids to whatever number of rides or showbags is manageable - and get them doing jobs around the house beforehand for pocket money.

Most of all, have a fun day seeing and doing all that's free at our fab show in our fab city. Showbag toys last 5 minutes; good memories with loved ones last a lifetime.

Royal shows are part of growing up and are never forgotten. The negotiation skills to obtain the show bag or show bags that you most desire. The rides and the fun. The farm animals and ribbons. Its a day not forgotten of childhood fun.
