London summers are so full of fancy festivals that sometimes it's hard to decide which one to go to.
Of course, if you have limitless free time and a packed wallet, you could probably make your way to all of them, but the reality is that those with a lot free time have little in their wallet, while those with a full wallet have little free time (because they're working all the hours to keep their wallet filled).
So sometimes you have to sit down, check out the listings, and pick out one or two – for it would be rather a shame to be living in London and not experience the joy of
any of its festivals.
Most festivals take place in parks, a few happen undercover, but as far as I know, only
one takes place in a car park. "A car park? I don't want to spend the whole day mooching around in a car park," you may well say. But wait –
StreetFest is a festival, car park or no car park, that'll be worth your time
and money.
Taking place at the end of May, StreetFest presents a powerful mix of performance art, live music, funky fashions and urban sports – all in the space of one car park (in Shoreditch).
Headlining this year's event is
The Nextmen, a critically acclaimed UK DJ/production/songwriting duo who, according to their own website, "carve up shiny gems from London's lovely low-end underbelly with albums, singles, mixes, remixes, podcasts, DJ sets and live shows, blending anything worth listening to from all electronic music styles."
One of StreetFest's highlights will be Secret Wars, the world's first live art battle, with two teams fighting it out for first prize.
Secret Wars is a 90-minute event involving white walls and black paint. Which team will come up with the goods? It'll be tense. It'll be tight. It might even be a little bit sweaty. But it will be entertainment quite unlike anything you've seen before.
Sports entertainment comes in the form of a 32-foot in-built ramp, where urban sports enthusiasts on wheels will show you a trick or two, spinning, rolling, jumping and generally daredevilling their way through the day.
Are you getting the picture? StreeFest is not your usual festival, but it may be
your kind of festival.
