On international loan, the 200 works of art from various museums around the world will be placed in a historical context with a wealth of information about their inception. Dating from 1910 to 1937, the pieces provide an insight into the Weimar Republic which characterised that period.
Featuring artists include Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, George Grosz and Hannah Hoch; all of whom shaped German art in the early twentieth century. With works from twelve different artists, there is sure to be much diversity amongst what is deemed to be of the same movement.
This modernist piece by George Grosz will be displayed at the NGV exhibition.
Distinctively German styles such as Bauhaus, characterised by its geometric theme, and Expressionism, which seeks to provide an exaggerated and emotional take on reality, will be showcased at the exhibition. Below is a video which explains the history of the Bauhaus movement.
Standard NGV exhibition ticket prices apply, with $15 adult and $12 concession tickets, which are available for online purchase now.
