The Tempest by Cheek by Jowl

Event: 07/04/2011 - 16/04/2011
Yes, Shakespeare's The Tempest is an English play though and though, but Cheek by Jowl has a Russian sister company, so they're doing it in Russian, as part of Moscow's International Chekhov Festival. Which makes it quite a different animal.

The Russian language seems to heighten any sense of danger and drama, which means that the dark scenes in the play will be darker, which will also make Shakespeare's wit and comedic scenes seem even lighter by contrast. So expect to see the roller coaster text you know, but with an ever more dramatic slope to the ride.

Declan Donnellan directs and the designer was Nick Ormerod – so not everything's Russian about the production. If you haven't seen anything by Cheek by Jowl, then these names will be ones you'll remember in the future – and they're well worth looking out for.
