Come on, admit it, you've all done it, played
air guitar, played the rip-roaring guitar solo of your choosing, perhaps in front of the mirror, perhaps not, definitely well away from the window, lost in your own world, headphones on or speakers blaring, by yourself. All by yourself.
Well, consider this - how about not doing it by yourself but instead packing your imaginary guitar into your imaginary guitar case and going along to the very real
UK Air Guitar Championships being held on Saturday 20th August at
The Garage in Highbury.
If you
are interested in taking part,
email as soon as you possibly can. This could be your big break.
If, however, you prefer to keep your air guitar antics behind closed doors, you might still want to go along and enjoy the event itself - you might even pick up a few tips while you're there.
Air guitarists take their performances very seriously, putting everything into it, even risking terrible injury (occasionally the splits can go horribly wrong, you see -- especially if you weren't even planning to do it).
There's really no contest in London like it at
any time of the year, let alone in the middle of summer when the heat can make us do the most extraordinary things.
The winner of the highly entertaining event will be known forever more (or at least until the next contest in 2012) as the UK Air Guitar Champion, a prestigious title if ever there was.
But even better than that, whoever wins on the night at The Garage will have the special honour of representing the UK at the
World Air Guitar Championships in Oulu, Finland.
Judges come in the form of two experienced musicians who know their stuff:
Gazz Marlow, lead guitarist of INME, who loved his first time at the event so much that he's decided to return to once again watch contestants pushing themselves and their air guitars to the very limits of what the human body and air guitar can take without needing to be carted off to a dark room for a long lie down.
Joining Gazz will be the superbly gifted Justin Hill, vocalist of the progressive metal band
Sikth. Being a vocalist, he's probably played a few air guitars in his time.

Anyone who tries entering the venue carrying a guitar will have it confiscated on the door. You have been warned....
