Walk the Shine Half-Marathon

Event: 01/10/2011
Shine is back for its second year, giving participants (that's you) the chance to help raise money for a good cause, keep fit, and enjoy a unique night of huge fun and entertainment. The event, organised by Cancer Research UK, involves a walk - a long walk. But it's a walk quite unlike any other.

To take part, you need to choose between the all-night marathon walk, or the almost-all-night half-marathon walk. But seeing as the marathon walk is already full, there's actually no choice to make. Saying that though, you'll have to hurry to secure a place for the half-marathon as it's filling up fast.

The meeting time for the half-marathon event, which starts at the O2 on 1st October, is 9.30pm for an 11.30pm start.

Remember, it is not a race. It moves at a leisurely (walking) pace and comprises people of all ages, and all shapes and sizes. Participants walk holding an array of lamps and lights that add a splash of pretty colour to the route, contributing to the magical atmosphere of the night.

Lots of entertainment will be laid on for participants and spectators along the walk, with music, special guests and light shows all helping towards making the evening a night to remember.

The organisers even set up special 'cheering points' where friends and family can gather to offer you encouragement on your quest to complete the course.

Ah - a quick word about 'donation stations'. At the start of the course you'll see a number of donation stations where participants can drop off bags of unwanted items (eg. clothes, CDs, DVDs, books etc) that will be sold later in charity shops.

Everyone taking part in Shine will receive a donation station bag a couple of weeks before the event, so be sure to spend a little bit of time rummaging around your home - it's a great chance for a clear out.

Participation requires payment of a £30 entrance fee that goes towards the cost of organising the event. And don't forget to get sponsored!
