A traditional triathlon is an endurance race that involves swimming, cycling and running in succession. The
Weet-Bix TRYathlon is a triathlon designed for children aged seven to fifteen years.
The Weet-Bix TRYathlon is the largest children's triathlon in the world. There are no winners or losers, as the focus is on children being active and having a try. All participants receive a medal and certificate, followed by a free breakfast.
The events are swimming, cycling and running. The 7 – 10 age group will swim 100 metres, cycle for three kilometres and run for 500 metres, while the 11 – 15 age group will swim 200 metres, cycle 6 kilometres and run one kilometre. Children are responsible for bringing their own bike and helmet with ASSA approved sticker – without this, children will not be allowed to participate.
To prepare for the TRYathlon, contestants should practice their swimming, cycling and running in the weeks leading to the event. Try to practice for at least one hour per week and be sure to warm up properly before you begin.
The right diet is also important for performance. Eat healthy meals and snacks regularly and incorporate lots of fresh fruit and vegetables and whole grains into your diet. Fluids are equally important, especially on the day – you should be drinking eight glasses of water per day.
The TRYathlon has already run its course around most Australian cities and will take place in Brisbane on Sunday 17 April. The event will be held at Lowe Oval (
Sports Drive, Underwood). Participants should
register by 3 April to receive their kit by post; the deadline for registrations is 12 April.
