This coming weekend is the nation's largest gathering of young writers is coming to Newcastle, NSW. Five days of authors, panels, screenings and workshops are on show to develop the nation's young writing talent and there is no catch – it's all free! The main focal points of the festival include zines, comics, blogging, screenwriting, poetry, spoken word contests, hip-hop, journalism, autobiography, comedy, song writing and prose. The
Young Writers Festival begins on Thursday 29th September and runs to Monday 3rd October at various locations around Newcastle.
The festival begins with young writers and NYWF Artists exchanging a meet and greet process to establish a sense of camaraderie within the group of artists and writers before the event starts. There are a number of activities Australia's young talent can partake in including the Young Writers workshops which include 'How to: Start a Writing Business' with facilitator Cameron Pegg, voice workshops where writers can edit and develop their own work, what every young journalist should know, Voice workshops for Australia's young poets and building the writers fictional worlds.
There are also a number of special events that the talent can partake in including the standout events of a pub lunch reading with Tom Doig discussing Franz Kafka's classic "Metamorphosis" and "The Diamond as big as the Ritz."
The festival concludes with readings during a poetry picnic and a workshop on writers' early works and how they can be improved along with the Creative Health Check with Charis Holt, Sarah Howell and Rebecca Giggs.
So whether you're a young writer or artist attempting to improve your work or get your talent exposed, or maybe you're a parent that is getting dragged along for the ride, whatever you're status, the young writers festival is a fun and fact filled day for any child or adolescent looking to break into the journalism or writing industry.
